Increasing repression against trade unionists
GLOBAL: The yearly survey of trade union rights violations by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) reports 209 trade unionists killed or “disappeared” – an increase of 50 per cent over last year’s figure, about 8,500 arrested, 3,000 more injured, over 100,000 harassed and nearly 20,000 dismissed because of their trade union activities.
According to the survey, which this year covers a record 140 countries, 27 more than in 1999, the trade union rights situation is the most disturbing in Colombia, Guatemala, Venezuela, Costa Rica, China, South Korea, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Belarus and the Gulf States.
Colombia is still the most dangerous country in the world for trade unionists.
