GENEVA: What makes the ILO different from other UN agencies is the fact that it is a tripartite organisation, writes Marcello Malentacchi. The idea of it being a forum for social dialogue is the basis for its work.
The new ILO director-general, Juan Somavía, has changed the ILO structure. According to Malentacchi, the employers’ and workers’ participation has been marginalized. This will change the scope of the ILO, and will not be accepted by the trade unions without a big fight.
